The Saga of a Kitten Rescue Part III: What Are We Longing For?
We were so thankful for a successful rescue. We witnessed those sweet babies – still blind and deaf – work to find and defend a nursing spot. The next morning, I headed out to walk with my memory verses, and the new one for that week was this,
“Like newborn infants,
long for the pure spiritual milk,
that by it you may grow up into salvation—
if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good.”
1 Peter 2:2-3
I could not miss the message if I tried. The Lord wants us seeking Him, spending time in His Word like a kitten goes after milk, and holding fast. After watching those kittens, I wanted to be sure that I was going that hard after the One who nourishes and satisfies us.
If that wasn’t enough, the next morning – with that same verse – I looked up and there was a deer standing by a small pond at the side of our house just staring at me. The verse that popped into my mind was Psalm 42:1,
“As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.”
Lord, let it be! Deer seek water and kittens nurse like their lives depend on it, because they do. Lord, wake us up to see that same spiritual truth that apart from Jesus there is no life. As He’s been telling us all along in places like Matthew 4:4b,
“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Lord, please make us hungry for it. Help us to crave relationship with You and feeding on Your Word like our lives depend on it, because they do.
