Psalm 50: The King Calls For A Gathering

“He calls to the heavens above and to the earth,

that he may judge his people:

‘Gather to me my faithful ones,

who made a covenant with me by sacrifice!’

The heavens declare his righteousness,

for God himself is judge! Selah “

Psalm 50:4-6

This is the proclamation of a King! The Judge is calling for a gathering of His faithful ones. These are the ones who have made a covenant with Him through sacrifice, and points beautifully to those who have come to God through Christ’s sacrificial work on the cross. Not only did God provide the sacrifice for the covenant, He is the One who keeps the covenant. If left to us, the covenant would be broken. Praise God that Psalm 89:34 says,

“I will not violate my covenant

or alter the word that went forth from my lips.”

He saves us and keeps us, and He alone will receive all the glory. We hear it in John 10:28,

“I give them eternal life,

and they will never perish,

and no one will snatch them out of my hand.”

The heavens declare His righteousness, and He has clothed us in it through Christ. With the picture of the Judge gathering His own, we are reminded that we have nothing to do with our own salvation. But as His children, how we live our lives matters. May we live obediently for the glory of our King, and the furtherance of His Kingdom! As my friend and author Georgia Tanner says, “Jesus notices if we’re working the field He’s given us.”

Lord, may we abide in You, so that the work will be done. You are worthy!
