Psalm 50: Our God Is A Consuming Fire
“Our God comes; he does not keep silence;
before him is a devouring fire,
around him a mighty tempest.”
Psalm 50:3
God’s word is power and should be obeyed for the good of all. The Gospel of Jesus Christ provides the way to dwell forever in the beauty in His presence. Yet many are tweaking the Good News which is like hiding the life preservers on a ship, so people don’t think about anything unpleasant. They try to make God “like-able” or “palate-able.” In so doing, they cloud the truth which saves and sets free. Who He truly is, is glorious.
God is a consuming fire who protects the righteous and destroys evil. The truth is, none of us are righteous apart from Christ. Telling someone God won’t send anyone to hell won’t keep them out of it. It might just keep them from avoiding it. Proverbs 9:10 says,
"The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom,
and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.”
Fear of God leads to understanding that we fall short and need a Savior. It’s in finding salvation in Christ that we fall in love with Him. Christ came to save us from God’s wrath. Through salvation we become His children, and we are ushered into His presence without dread of harm.
Don’t let anyone rob you of the wonder of knowing God through Christ that begins and continues with a healthy fear and reverence of our holy God. We need this in our Victor!
“Know therefore today that he who goes over before you
as a consuming fire is the LORD your God.
He will destroy them and subdue them before you.
So you shall drive them out and make them perish quickly,
as the LORD has promised you.”
Deuteronomy 9:3
