Psalm 50: Opportunity For God’s Glory

In Psalm 50 the Lord is proclaiming truth: He made it all; He owns it all; He is sovereign over it all; and He has power over it all. Though God needs nothing from us, we saw what He wants a thankful heart. Our next verse reveals something else He wants. Psalm 50:15 says,

“…and call upon me in the day of trouble;

I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me.”

This verse gives me hope and relief. It’s so simple and clear. What an invitation!

We live in the clash of two kingdoms - God’s and Satan’s. Through Christ we come on board the victorious Kingdom and are rescued out of Satan’s collapsing kingdom. Jesus told us in John 16:33 that in this world we will have tribulation, but to take heart because He has overcome. So if a hard thing hits a believer – and it will – we can be sure God has allowed it for our advantage and His glory.

God has Satan on a leash, so when he is allowed to move it’s because God has a plan. Throughout Scripture we can see times when God’s people didn’t call to Him when He allowed a showdown to be setup. It robbed God of being seen as the deliverer. His intention is that we go to Him for help, and experience deliverance from Him, so that He is glorified in it.

As God sets up showdowns we can wonder in times of trouble, “What might my good God have planned?” Adrian Rogers said it like this, “See all Satanic opposition as opportunity.”

What a perspective! Our purpose is to glorify God. By running to Him for help, we get to do just that. Lord, thank You for caring and praise You for being our deliverer!
