Paying Attention To The Weightier Things
When we speak of things that matter, we sometimes call them “weighty.” We recently looked in class at some verses reminding us of why Bible Study matters. You talk about something that’s weighty – God’s Word matters. If we think we can serve God apart from His Word, we will find ourselves in a spiritually anemic existence.
Jesus said in Matthew 23:23,
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites!
For you tithe mint and dill and cumin,
and have neglected the weightier matters of the law:
justice and mercy and faithfulness.
These you ought to have done,
without neglecting the others.”
One persons idea of justice, mercy, or faithfulness may differ from another’s. We need to seek God’s Word for what is true; what these things really mean. We do not want to neglect His valuable instruction.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 says,
“All Scripture is breathed out by God
and profitable for teaching,
for reproof,
for correction,
and for training in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete,
equipped for every good work.
The Bible is God-breathed and infallible. It is necessary sustenance for the believer. We can think we’re okay, but if we are neglecting time hearing from Him consistently from His Word we can end up so far off track. Jeremiah 10:23 says,
“O LORD, I know the way of man is not in himself;
It is not in man who walks to direct his own steps.”
So bless you for being in the weightier matter of God’s Word. It blesses not just you, but all who are around you. Lord, thank You for loving us so much that you would give us such treasure. Please keep us desperate for the weightier things!
