Opening Our Spiritual Mouths To Receive

Our porch light became the chosen spot for a bird’s nest. One day I saw a baby looking out with big eyes, a closed beak, and Einstein-looking hair. He did not appear too thrilled with his lot in life. But the next day was different. All their little heads were up, and their beaks were open as wide as they could go. With no parent in sight, it was tempting to start digging for worms. It made me think of Psalm 81:10,

“I am the LORD your God,

who brought you up out of the land of Egypt.

Open your mouth wide, and I will fill it.”

If my heartstrings were pulled by those wide open mouths, imagine how our Father feels when He sees our spiritual mouths desperately wanting to be filled with Him. God desires to satisfy us as only He can. Let’s ask Him to give us a hunger for His Word and a hunger to obey Him. Jesus said in John 4:34b, “

“My food is to do the will of him who sent me,

and to accomplish his work.”

May our spiritual mouths be open, not just to speak those things we think we want to say, but hungry with quiet hearts to receive all we need in order to accomplish our Father’s work.

By afternoon it did my heart good to see those baby birds being fed by a good parent.  Psalm 103:5 (NKJV) says the Lord is the One,

“Who satisfies your mouth with good things,

So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.”

Let’s bless our Father’s heart by opening wide our spiritual mouths, so that He can fill us.

For he satisfies the longing soul,

and the hungry soul he fills with good things.”
