Journeying in Genesis: Two Trees
“And out of the ground
the LORD God made to spring up
every tree that is pleasant to the sight and good for food.
The tree of life was in the midst of the garden,
and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”
Genesis 2:9
It’s good to thank God for beauty and delicious food. The garden is about relationship and the glory of God. It’s about serving with the incomparable pleasure and delight found only in Him.
God created trees in the garden for food. In the midst of the garden were two trees that were different. A covering cherub had already fallen and would show up as a serpent. That battle was not the man’s, but God’s. Only God can handle evil.
But, oh, the Tree of Life! We will stay tuned, as we continue in Genesis 2, to see the instruction on how to protect the work of the garden. Let’s stay in His Word and prayer, so that we will know what to embrace and what to run from. Psalm 32:8 says,
“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
I will counsel you with my eye upon you.”
It’s when we look away from the face of our beautiful Savior, that the clarity of the two trees might grow dim. Let’s keep our gaze on Him, so we aren’t distracted by the dazzle of a Serpent. In our eternal home there will be nothing that could harm, but the Tree of Life will be there!
“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.
To the one who conquers I will grant to eat of the tree of life,
which is in the paradise of God.”
Revelation 2:7
