Journeying in Genesis: Looks Can Be Deceiving
“So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,
and that it was a delight to the eyes,
and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise,
she took of its fruit and ate,
and she also gave some to her husband who was with her,
and he ate.
Genesis 3:6
Even if it looked like the tree was good for something, it wasn’t good for Eve. Partaking would lead to death. Looks can be deceiving, so let’s watch what we view, hear, or touch. In the book of Judges we see that, “Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.” It was a train wreck. Proverbs 3:5 says,
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.”
God had been clear. Eve trusted her own eyes and desired her own wisdom. With her thoughts askew from entertaining the lies of the enemy, the illusion enticed her to sin. Proverbs 3:7 says,
“Be not wise in your own eyes;
fear the LORD, and turn away from evil.”
Proverbs 3:18 says of God’s wisdom,
“She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed.”
If Adam had done that, he could have guarding what had been entrusted to him. There is so much out of order here. Eve took the lead, and with the spine of a jellyfish, Adam neglected his position as husband. Rather than protecting against evil, he joined in.
I’m thankful for this reminder to rely on the Lord. He loves and cares for us, desiring to protect, nurture, and defend us. He’s an excellent Husband. Our Creator is good and His commands are for us!
