Journeying in Genesis: Don’t Bite
“Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked.
And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths.”
Genesis 3:7
They couldn’t go back and undo the tragedy, but we won’t get out of Genesis 3 without the Creator of all things providing hope for redemption. Adam and Eve had done what was right in their own eyes, desiring something apart from God. James 1:15 says,
“Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin,
and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.”
Hebrews 11:25 mentions the fleeting pleasure of sin. During the pleasure part, Eve brought Adam on board. Misery loves company and I suspect sin does too. I can’t help but wonder if Eve declared - See, I didn’t die! Yet it wouldn’t be long before that spiritual death would begin to bear fruit. Sin makes promises it just doesn’t keep. Their eyes were open, and rather than being like God, they had lost their dignity. Rather than cultivating, they were covering.
One of my daughters came home from elementary school and told me about a conversation she had with a friend. Because of the teaching of evolution, he thought Adam and Eve must have been monkeys. Her response was to point out that monkeys wouldn’t be ashamed that they were naked. Out of the mouths of babes.
When it comes to the deception of sin, don’t bite. No one ends up addicted to something they never try. No one struggles to put down something they never pick up. Those things we find ourselves addicted to, we likely wish we had never experienced because our flesh finds it hard not to go back for more. Praise God for His wisdom, for repentance, and for freedom in Christ!
