Journeying in Genesis: Don’t Fall For Lies

"But the serpent said to the woman,

‘You will not surely die.

For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened,

and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”

Genesis 3:4-5

What God knew, was that if she partook she would die. So He kindly warned them. Eve was in relationship with the Lord. She could have sought His counsel. She could have rested in who she knew Him to be. She could have remained in truth and obeyed her Sovereign. But Satan is good at what He does. He craftily whetted her appetite for what would give momentary pleasure, but would lead to death. He’s a destroyer.

Eve was choosing self over her Creator, just like Satan did. That’s what we do when we sin. Satan offered questioning God’s nature. That set up the bullseye of a flat out lie, “You will not surely die.” The truth is, she surely would.

Choosing to believe that her good and faithful Creator was giving bad instruction, and that He was holding out on her, she rebelled against His kindness and provision. She took the bait that would contaminate the whole human race. Jeremiah 17:9 warns,

“The heart is deceitful above all things,

and desperately sick;

who can understand it?”

Our hearts can lead us astray, but God’s Word never will. Obedience to Him has great reward and keeps us spiritually safe and blessed. We’re at war, spiritually speaking, and 1 Peter 5:8 says,

“Be sober-minded; be watchful.

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion,

seeking someone to devour.”

Let’s find out what’s really true from God’s Word, and then refuse to fall for lies no matter how much our flesh may want to believe them.
