Grab Bag Spirituality
I saw a bird fly to a rooftop with its prey. It appears Western culture had crept in, because its prey was a fast food bag. I wondered what its meal would actually be, and I’m sure it did, too. If the bird had caught its own prey, it would know what was about to be served. But, having grabbed a quicker, lighter, easier lunch, the bird would be eating whatever was in that bag. Good? Bad? Who knows.
This bird gives us a spiritual analogy. We must make the effort, and set aside the time, to get healthy spiritual food from the Bible ourselves. In this day of social media, it’s easy to grab a quick spiritual word, consuming quick bites – some good, some harmful. By just grabbing the “fast food” bag of spiritual teaching, we’re not going to know the difference.
Let’s pay attention what we’re eating, spiritually speaking. Spoon fed religion is dangerous, and false pastors and teachers are plentiful. Dining with Christ to hear directly from Him in His Word is vital. Don’t just let someone else tell you what the Bible says. It may seem quicker or easier, but you don’t really know what you’re going to get.
I am so thankful for faithful Pastors and Bible teachers who fear God and share His Word as it’s written. They would be the first to instruct us not to just grab something from them or anyone else without checking it out for ourselves. 2 Timothy 2:15 says,
“Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,
a worker who has no need to be ashamed,
rightly handling the word of truth.”
Lord, sober us to see how vital this is, and give us a hunger for your Word.
