Advent Day Twenty-Four: If Jesus Had Not Come, We Would Have No Inheritance
There was once a people who had everything one could desire. They shared in all their King had to offer. But a villain arrived with swelling words that were lies. They rejected the King’s inheritance for what would turn out to be a horror like no other.
What if Jesus had not come? We would be forever separated from the treasure of knowing and living with our Creator and God. We could no longer be children and heirs. We would only know loss, horror, and lack for all eternity.
But Jesus did come!
By trusting Christ alone for our salvation, we become children of God. As if that’s not enough, Romans 8:17 says,
“…and if children, then heirs—
heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ,
provided we suffer with him
in order that we may also be glorified with him.”
Fellow heirs with Christ? Indescribable grace.
An earthly inheritance is nice, but temporary. Titus 3:7 lets us know that we have been justified by His grace that, “…we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
This is an eternal inheritance.
We have gained much and have much to share. Let’s live in the humility of what He has done for a wayward people. If you are blessed enough to have gifts to open or gifts to give this Christmas, let it be a reminder of the gift of inheritance Your Heavenly Father has given you through His Son.
Our warning is from Galatians 3:29,
"And if you are Christ's,
then you are Abraham's offspring,
heirs according to promise.”
If we think we can earn His inheritance, we have missed the boat. It is a gift by grace through faith, so that all boasting is in our great King. May many choose His eternal inheritance!
