Advent Day Four: If Jesus Had Not Come, We Could Not See

In the beginning, people had spiritual eyes to see how things really are. Their own treachery caused sin to enter, and they became spiritually blind. No matter how much spiritual light was available, they still could not see.

What if Christ had not come? Even with the provision of spiritual light, we could not see with spiritually blind eyes. If He had not come, we would still be in darkness.

But Jesus did come!

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened,

and the ears of the deaf unstopped…”

Isaiah 35:5

He not only brings light, but He heals our spiritual blindness. Jesus healed physically blind eyes, but it was a picture of what needs to happen to each one of us spiritually before this life is over.

For today, let’s use this reminder to ask Him to improve our spiritual vision.

“Open my eyes, that I may behold

wondrous things out of your law.”

Psalm 119:18

We must also have compassion on those who are still spiritually blind. Verses like Leviticus 19:14 and Deuteronomy 27:18 reveal God’s disdain for anyone who would put a stumbling block before a blind person or mislead them. That’s how He feels about pastors and teachers who put spiritual stumbling blocks in the way of the sheep and mislead them. They will not get away with it. Let’s love others and have compassion. Present only the light of truth and don’t waiver. Pray for spiritual eyes to be opened.

As we look to the future our warning insists that we act while there is still time. Isaiah 42:18 says,

“Hear, you deaf,

and look, you blind, that you may see!”

There is eternal life to be gained! Ask God to open your eyes spiritually. May we appreciate our Redeemer and choose sight!
