Advent Day Five: If Jesus Had Not Come, We Could Not Hear
In the beginning, people talked with God. Once sin entered, they heard His voice, but now with terror rather than joy. They no longer heard wonder. Their physical ears could hear, but spiritual deafness had set in.
What if Jesus had not come? There would be no good news to herald. No human would rejoice at the sound of God’s voice. There would be no ear to receive the Gospel. There would be no truly joyful sound.
But Jesus did come!
When He was on earth, Jesus healed deaf ears to point to our need to be given spiritual ears to hear. When the shepherds heard about the birth of Jesus, they were given spiritual ears to pick up the wondrous sound and made haste to go there.
“And the angel said to them,
‘Fear not, for behold,
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.
For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior,
who is Christ the Lord.’"
Luke 2:10-11
Has the Lord been speaking to your heart about something? Has He given you ears to hear, but you have not yet moved? Let’s giddy up and act on what we’ve heard. Let’s proclaim the Gospel that others might hear and believe.
Our warning for the future is in John 8:47,
“Whoever is of God hears the words of God.
The reason why you do not hear them
is that you are not of God.”
It is dangerous to hear and reject the good news of Jesus Christ. It can harden a heart to the point of not being able to receive.
Lord, give us ears to hear! Open spiritually deaf ears. May many choose to hear and obey.
