We Are What We Trust
Psalm 135:15-17 tells us that idols have mouths, but don’t speak; eyes, but don’t see; ears, but don’t hear; mouths with no breath. Then Verse 18 says,
“Those who make them become like them,
so do all who trust in them.”
Just think about being like the things we set up as idols – the things in which we trust.
A person who idolizes another person, will take on traits of that person. Those who idolize their children often act like children. Worshippers of material things take on inanimate hearts. Idolizing power can produce a god-like complex. And one of the most dangerous is worship of self where we write our own rules. Worshipping something other than God robs one of truth.
The word for “make” in Psalm 135:18, is the same word for “make” in Genesis 1:26a,
“Then God said,
‘Let us make man in our image,
after our likeness.’”
When God created the heavens and earth, He put things in their proper and orderly groupings. Plants, fish, birds, cattle, etc. When He created man, He revealed His desire that we would be in His grouping. We would never be God, but we would be with Him and like Him – kind, wise, caring, loving, joyful, purposeful, etc. We would be one with Him. We would glorify Him.
Sin changed all of that. When we worship anything other than God, we become futile. But when we are rescued through the blood of Christ, we are set free to humbly worship God and be transformed into His image day by day bearing His fruit!
We are invited to trust in God, and so become more like Jesus!
“Worship the LORD in the splendor of holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth!”
Psalm 96:9
