Psalm 50: God is Self-Sufficient
“If I were hungry, I would not tell you,
for the world and its fullness are mine.”
Psalm 50:12
God doesn’t need us; He loves us. Self-sufficiency is in the definition of His very name. Our service is not to One who couldn’t get along without us. Our service is to the One who graciously and generously allows us to be a part – in His strength – of the greatest Kingdom there will ever be. Why is He so merciful and gracious to us? Because of His great love for us.
God made humans in His image. It’s interesting how fallen humans create gods in their own image: needy, unreliable, unstable. Jeremiah 10:5a says,
“Their idols are like scarecrows in a cucumber field,
and they cannot speak;
they have to be carried,
for they cannot walk.”
Whether idols of wood, stone, and metal; or idols of pleasure, power, and material things, they are futile and will wear us out. God on the other hand, refreshes those who obediently serve and enjoy Him, allowing Him to minister to them.
Jeremiah 10 is a great chapter on the absurdity of bowing to something other than the Creator. Why do we do it? I think it goes back to our desire to rule ourselves and not bow the knee to God. Lord, break us and cause us to come under Your righteous rule. You are worthy and we are needy.
We’ll close with one of my favorite quotes, as we consider our verse from Psalm 50 today.
