Psalm 2 Part IV: Who We Kiss Matters

Finishing Psalm 2, our merciful God provides warning and shows the way to true safety. Verses 10-12 say,

“Now therefore, O kings, be wise;

be warned, O rulers of the earth.

Serve the LORD with fear,

and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son,

lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,

for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Blessed are all who take refuge in him.”

The only protection from God is in Him. To kiss the Son is to bow the knee. So let’s be careful which “son” we are kissing. Revelation 13:11 speaks of antichrist,

“Then I saw another beast rising out of the earth.

It had two horns like a lamb and it spoke like a dragon.”

2 Thessalonians 2:4 tells us he will claim to be god. Satan is brilliant at deception. He may look like the lamb, appearing loving and compassionate. But true believers will know this is not the voice of their Shepherd; the whole counsel of God. He may promise all our fleshly desires, but do not kiss him!

1 John 4:3 says that this spirit is not only coming, but is already in the world. We see it on social media when Jesus is misrepresented and described as one who would vote a certain way or support a certain agenda. Jesus is neither conservative nor liberal – He is other. Who He truly is helps us see the difference between toxic empathy and actually loving our neighbor.

To shape Jesus from our own imagining (or to support our agenda) is to create a god of our own making. His wrath is targeted for such things. May we kiss the true Son who is sanctifying us from the lure of the flesh, not leaving us in it.  The true Son who loves to redeem!
