Journeying in Genesis: Wonderful Counselor
“And they heard the sound of the LORD God
walking in the garden in the cool of the day,
and the man and his wife hid themselves
from the presence of the LORD God
among the trees of the garden.
But the LORD God called to the man and said to him,
‘Where are you?’”
Genesis 3:8-9
I don’t know what the sound was like, but it thrills me to think about. Was it the sound of movement? Was He singing or talking? God had created this Garden where people walked with God. His presence once brought Adam and Eve joy and gladness. When sin entered, they began hiding from the only One who could help them; the only One who could provide life and satisfaction.
The mercy and grace of God astound me. They deserved to never see or hear from Him again. Yet there He was, ready to deal with what had happened. I love how throughout Scripture, the Lord asks questions. He never asks because He doesn’t know. He’s called Wonderful Counselor for a reason. He asks, so that we might understand.
“Where are you?” God knew exactly where they were, what they had done, and why they were there. He knows the same about us. He helps us see where our hearts are and why we do what we do. If you are in Christ, He is Your Lord, Creator, Caretaker, Friend, and Counselor who speaks to us through His Word.
Would you join me in asking the Lord to counsel us? Let’s get still before Him and ask, “Lord, where am I? Is my heart off track? Aligned with You? Lord, show me and help me to get where You want me to be, safely finding satisfaction in You.”
