Journeying in Genesis: Marriage is a Picture of the Gospel

“Then the man said,

‘This at last is bone of my bones

and flesh of my flesh;

she shall be called Woman,

because she was taken out of Man.’

Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” Genesis 2:23-24

In the beginning, God brought order from chaos. Marriage is part of that brilliant order. Marriage done God’s way is an incredible relationship. The order of sex only in a covenant of marriage gives children a secure place to land.

Another reason marriage as instituted by God matters, is because it’s a picture of the Gospel. We see this in places like Ephesians 5. The husband represents Christ, so men should love their wives as Christ loves the church. Women represent believers and with a husband behaving like Christ should have no problem respecting and honoring him. The covenant of oneness in marriage represents the new covenant of the Gospel that births spiritual children into everlasting life. God calls idolatry, spiritual adultery.

We can see why the enemy seeks to blur the institution of marriage. But for those who know His truth and guard it through salvation in Jesus Christ we rejoice in Revelation 19:6-8,

"Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude,

like the roar of many waters

and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,

‘Hallelujah!

For the Lord our God

the Almighty reigns.

Let us rejoice and exult

and give him the glory,

for the marriage of the Lamb has come,

and his Bride has made herself ready;

it was granted her to clothe herself

with fine linen, bright and pure’— for the fine linen

is the righteous deeds of the saints.”
