Journeying in Genesis: It Is Finished!

“So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy,

because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.”

Genesis 2:3

What a picture. Just as God knew His instruction for the Passover lamb represented what His innocent Son would endure, so this seventh day pointed to what His Son would accomplish. When sin entered it shattered the rest, and disrupted God’s glorious display. But there was a rescue plan in place. God could have scrapped the whole mess, but continued to the praise of His mercy and grace. James 1:5 tells us that when sin is finished, it brings forth death. When Jesus completed His work on the cross, the power of sin and death was finished - as in defeated!

On the sixth day God finished creation. He rested on the seventh day, because there was nothing left to be done. When Jesus died, the veil of the temple was torn in two inviting us to enter ultimate rest! Jesus declared from the cross,

"It is finished.”

The work for restoration and our salvation was complete! And the next day was a Sabbath. Woe to the One who tries to add to the finished work to gain salvation. Woe to the one who misses this ultimate rest, because of unbelief.

Oh, Jesus. You did it! Bravo and thank You! You alone are the Victor! May we forever honor the risen Savior. May we forever hail Jesus King of kings and Lord of Lords. May we boast in the One who hung on the cross taking our sin and receiving our punishment, the One who brought us completion!

As creation groans for the full display of redemption at Christ’s return, let’s honor our Author and Finisher by singing Christ Be Magnified.
