Journeying in Genesis: He Already Knows
“O God, you know my folly;
the wrongs I have done are not hidden from you.”
Psalm 69:5
In most cases, when a child is behaving, the entrance of a parent is joyful. When a child is not, the entrance might bring a sinking feeling. Sin separates and makes us hide, run, lie, blame, and falsely cover. The Garden of Eden was a place of joy and innocence where people walked with God. But because of sin, the same sound they once cherished caused them to hide in fear.
As we study creation, it’s not surprising that nothing is hidden from the Creator. Yet the guilt and shame of sin cause us to attempt hiding and falsely covering up. We might be able to fool people, but God cannot be fooled. Hebrews 4:13 states the obvious,
“And no creature is hidden from his sight,
but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom
we must give account.”
And we will give account. When God was questioning Adam and Eve, He didn’t need answers. He set them up to admit their transgressions and cry out to the only One who could help them. If we refuse to submit to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, our hearts can harden. The delusion that sets in may even bring a deadness to guilt and shame that would otherwise have us crying out for mercy. But if we confess that we are sinners in need of a Savior, and trust Christ for our salvation, we are cleansed in His blood so that guilt and shame are rolled away! His holiness is a precious gift that brings peace with God, restored fellowship with Him, and the return of innocence that rejoices in His presence. Praise Him!
