Journeying in Genesis: Choose Friendship Wisely

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith,

we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

Romans 5:1

Before we move ahead in Genesis 3, let’s focus on this idea of enmity. Sin derailed the perfect order so brilliantly created by God. What the enemy means for evil, God means for good. When all of this went down, there was a plan of salvation in place. The Creator Himself would pay the ransom – providing an eternal display of His mercy and grace.

We live in the clash of two kingdoms – God’s eternal Kingdom and Satan’s collapsing one. God is restoring order as He patiently gives opportunity for salvation through Christ. As believers, Romans 12:18 instructs us,

“If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.”

But we are not to be friends with the world. James 4:4b makes it clear,

“Do you not know

that friendship with the world is enmity with God?

Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world

makes himself an enemy of God.”

As culture moves away from the Bible, some churches are too. They want to remain friends with the world, while their assigned purpose is to guard truth. How will others hear the true Gospel, if those who are meant to guard it move away from it?

As we love those in the world, we want to be sure that we are not forming a friendship with this world system ruled by Satan and opposed to God. Romans 5:10 says,

“For if while we were enemies

we were reconciled to God

by the death of his Son,

much more, now that we are reconciled,

shall we be saved by his life.”

He is worthy of our whole-hearted devotion!
