Journeying in Genesis: A God Who Saves
“The man called his wife’s name Eve, because she was the mother of all living.
And the LORD God made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins and clothed them.”
Genesis 3:20-21
Eve, meaning life-giver, took a big bite of disobedience that would poison the human race. Christ would come through her lineage to offer eternal life, making her the mother of all who would live through Him. If it were left to us and our own wisdom, the whole lot of us would end up in hell. We had no way of saving ourselves. If God didn’t save us, we would not have been saved.
Adam and Eve tried to cover with fig leaves that would shrivel and die. Their loving Creator had just been hit with rebellion that knocked the glorious and perfect order off kilter. He explained the curse that sin brings with the plan of salvation already in place. When people speak ill of God, they’re speaking of the One who rather than torture the rebels, clothed them. This covering would point to the necessity of the shedding of blood for the true cleansing of sin. The Creator was already pointing us to the cross. Leviticus 17:11 says the life is in the blood and was given to make atonement for their souls. It points to Jesus as we see in Hebrews 9:13-14,
“For if the blood of goats and bulls,
and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer,
sanctify for the purification of the flesh,
how much more will the blood of Christ,
who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God,
purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.”
How much more! Oh, the blood of Jesus.
